What DNA Revealed About The 7,000 Year Old Mummies Found In Chile Is Extremely Interesting

Two thousand years before the Egyptians wrapped their first pharaoh, a fishing culture on the coast of the Atacama Desert was already mummifying their dead. The Chinchorro people — living along the Pacific coast of present-day northern Chile and southern Peru from roughly 7000 to 1500 BCE — created the oldest known artificially mummified human remains on Earth. The oldest confirmed specimen, a child from the Camarones Valley, dates to approximately 5050 BCE. Over two hundred and eighty mummies have been discovered since 1903. And unlike every other ancient civilization that practiced mummification, the Chinchorro didn't reserve it for kings or priests. They mummified everyone — the elderly, adults, children, infants, and even miscarried fetuses. The youngest and most vulnerable members of their society often received the most elaborate treatment. DNA analysis has identified the Chinchorro as carriers of mitochondrial haplogroup A2 — a lineage that traces back to the earliest waves of human migration into the Americas from northeast Asia across Beringia. Their genetic signature connects them to some of the oldest founding populations of the continent, suggesting deep roots in the region stretching back thousands of years before mummification even began. Researchers at the University of Tarapacá and Chile's National Museum of Natural History have extracted skin and hair samples from fifteen mummies to map genetic links with modern South American populations — attempting to answer whether present-day Chileans still carry Chinchorro genes. Bone chemistry and isotope analysis show that roughly ninety percent of their diet came from the sea — fish, shellfish, sea mammals — with only ten percent from terrestrial sources. They were coastal survivors in one of the driest places on Earth. The mummification itself reveals an understanding of human anatomy that shouldn't have existed at this time period. They disassembled the body completely — removed skin, flesh, organs, and brain — dried the skeleton, reinforced the bones with sticks, stuffed the body with vegetable fiber and clay, reattached the skin, modeled clay face masks with openings for eyes, nose, and mouth, and painted the entire body with black manganese or red ochre depending on the era. The technique evolved over four thousand years through three distinct phases — Black, Red, and Mud-coated — each representing a different period of cultural and artistic development. Arsenic levels in the local water supply were extremely high, and researcher Bernardo Arriaza has proposed that chronic arsenic poisoning caused devastating rates of miscarriage and infant mortality — and that the practice of mummification may have begun as an emotional response by parents who couldn't accept losing their children.
