Natalie Harp, Trump & the Psychology of Idealization

But it also raises a fascinating psychological question: What happens when we idealize another human being? In this episode of Psychology for the People, I use the Harp story as a starting point for exploring idealization through psychoanalysis and Heinz Kohut's self psychology. Why do children need people they can look up to? What happens when that need isn't adequately met? Why do we sometimes turn lovers, therapists, teachers, spiritual leaders—or political figures—into larger-than-life protectors? And what happens when the person on the pedestal inevitably disappoints us? I also share some of my own history with idealization, a memorable story from my clinical work, and a short exercise for examining whom you've placed on a pedestal—and what qualities you may be trying to borrow from them.
