Very impressive engineering! I can remember when my grandfather bought a 20hp Mercury outboard when they first came out I think it cost about 375 or 400 hundred dollars . I’m 70 years old now.

There’s an additional thing to mention in regards to the 400, 400R and 500R vs 600. Choosing the smaller engines is often also a matter of performance. Yes the 600 is powerful, but it was never designed for high speed. A boat rigged with say triple 400R’s will run faster and perform better at higher speeds, than the twin 600 boat. Same goes for a bigger boat running five 500R’s va four 600’s. Those contra rotating props are not meant for speed. As we know from Bravo 3 and Volvo Duo prop setups, anything above 70-75 mph becomes significantly more inefficient as the leading prop starts to create exessive drag
Also the power to weight ratio is completely different. A triplet of 400’s is actually lighter than twin 600’s.
So when choosing, it’s not just about needing less power. A 1600 hp boat rigged with a quad of 400R’s will most likely outperform a triple V12 600 boat in certain areas. And be almost 1000 lbs lighter.

Honda making noise with their outboard V8 so very much an amazing set up for 2025 as no shortage of high horsepower options absolutely 😊😊
