Илья Мечников: Открытия, которые навсегда изменили медицину / Личности / МИНАЕВ

Ilya Mechnikov won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of immunity, but in Russia he's known for something entirely different: yogurt. The scientist, who first explained how the body defends itself against infections, seriously believed that life could be extended with lactic acid bacteria. He searched for the secret to the longevity of Bulgarian peasants, developed a probiotic diet, and unwittingly launched an entire industry that still operates worldwide. What was dairy production like in the Russian Empire? Why did Mechnikov even begin searching for longevity? What was Mechnikov's famous yogurt, and why did his research receive such criticism from his colleagues? How did Danone turn a fermented milk product into a mass-market product? We'll discuss all this in the new episode of the "Personalities" series.
