I Agree with Gavin on Marian Apparitions.

I think Gavin’s point on predisposition was that the figure was described in a way that is not exclusive to Mary. The first person to identify the apparition as Mary was someone who was likely to jump to a Marian apparition as an explanation. After that point, the cat is out of the bag and anyone who hears about the event is going into the experience with the idea of Mary in the back of their mind. I think in that way, he can have it both ways.

Did cameron just claim that saul would not have known what samuel, the prohpet who literally annointed him as king, looked like? and subtly accusing gavin of lacking evidence for cessationism, when gavin is a continuationist anyways? alright then..

I'm RC but I can see how a Protestant could accept Zeitoun and remain Protestant. Lutherans and Anglicans often have strong devotion to Mary, but reject what they see as excesses in Catholic and Orthodox devotion to her. Nothing about Zeitoun forces a Protestant to accept, say, Mary as co-redemtrix, or as Immaculately Conceived.

The greatest testament to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus are the proclamations of the apostles even in death. There is no stronger evidence and you will find no other in all of human history of anyone willing to die as they did for a lie. That being said Zeitoun is a wonderful miracle and further testament.

I think you’re comment that the initial viewers of the apparition didn’t think it was Mary was an oversight or a misuse of Gavins point and a poor refutation. For it to be a snowball based on expected bias, does not mean it has to originate with the first viewers, only that it would snowball once stated by a viewer. Gavin, in his video even states that the first viewers weren’t Catholic and that it was the janitor of the church that suggested it was Mary to the other viewers. Thus snowballing from the initial suggestion, regardless of when it was made. Though still very early on in the apparitions appearance. Overall I didn’t find many of these arguments very compelling against what Gavin said.

I think Gavin’s point of it not being theologically significant was also misunderstood. The conclusion he reached was that we cannot be certain what or who the apparition was. Therefore we cannot draw any theological significance from it. You state that it has theological significance in x, y, z areas but that’s all based on your initial assumption that it is in fact Mary, which is far from clear. You kindve skipped an assumption to make that point.

Overall great dialogue, interested to see where it continues!

God bless!

If this is really Mary appearing, at times with "the Christ-child," why does she have "the Christ-child?" Jesus isn't a baby anymore. 🤨

As a lifelong Catholic, I can’t commend you enough for discussing and standing by this as a Catholic convert. It’s a commitment to the faith and courage that’s rare to see these days. Still love your general ecumenical goals with the channel but happy to see you embrace the faith like this. Praying for you man.

It baffles me how this is greater evidence than the resurrection. It lacks contact and content. Christ the Lord not only spoke and spent time with our Apostles, but the very hinge of our inherited faith relies on their witness, through the mercy of God.

The resurrection is greater in both its effect, its meaning, and its evidence, by 100 fold.

Thank you, Cameron. You’ve almost single-handedly gotten the whole internet talking about Zeitoun! I am fascinated by all the evidence too. Blessings. -Fr. Louis.

I have to say that it does serve to legitimize Oriental Orthodoxy. While that is not to say that Our Lady of Zeitune legitimizes OO over other branches of Christianity, but the story associated with Zeitun is that she wanted a church built in Zeitune in her honor. So if you previously thought OO was illegitimate, now there is good reason to think that heaven is aware of and legitimizes OO worship.
