Painting a Waterfall | Alla Prima Oil Painting Process

The Impression of Water | Alla Prima Oil Painting In this video, we follow the creation of a waterfall landscape painted directly on canvas using the alla prima technique. The painting explores the relationship between water, light, atmosphere and movement, allowing the landscape to emerge through spontaneous brushwork and the direct application of color. Rather than reproducing nature literally, the intention is to capture its sensation—the changing light, the movement of the water and the atmosphere surrounding the falls. The work also establishes a dialogue with the history of Impressionist painting. In 1874, a group of artists including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, Paul Cézanne and Alfred Sisley exhibited independently in Paris, challenging the conventions of the official Salon. Their paintings emphasized contemporary life, changing atmospheric conditions and the visual experience of the moment. One of the fundamental contributions of Impressionism was its approach to light and color. Instead of treating color simply as a descriptive element, the Impressionists used it to suggest light, atmosphere, space and depth. Their interest in painting outdoors and observing nature directly placed the changing conditions of light at the heart of the creative process. This painting continues that conversation from a contemporary perspective. The alla prima method shares with this tradition an interest in immediacy. The painting is developed directly on the canvas, working with wet paint and making decisions in the moment rather than constructing the image through a long sequence of dry layers. The brushstroke remains visible, preserving the energy of the process and allowing color and texture to become part of the subject itself. Here, the waterfall is therefore more than a landscape. It becomes an exploration of how painting can transform the sensation of nature into color, gesture and movement.
