I think it is safe to say that she is a good teacher only because her intentions are good, but her methods are very questionable. I think claiming to want to prepare her students for their future by threatening them and forcing them to compete against each other among other things is highly problematic. It is worse that this is all happening to impressionable grade school students. This would not only not work on older students but it would certainly be labeled as abuse by the more articulate students. Finally, I want to say that saying that life is unfair because of the people they will encounter is really just allowing the obviously problematic status quo to remain unchallenged. The reason she can manipulate the parents so easily is the status quo in Japan dictates a child’s grades are more important than their happiness; getting good grades leads to getting to a better university and a high paying job whether the child actually wants any of it or not.
