The History of Concrete — The Material That Built and Broke the Modern World

128 AD. A Roman emperor finishes a dome that has never once needed repair. Nearly two thousand years later, the material we replaced it with is failing in decades. #objectlore #history #documentary #concrete Every year, humans pour roughly four billion tonnes of cement — more manufactured material than anything else on Earth except water. This is the story of how that happened. It starts in 150 BC with volcanic ash nobody else wanted, runs through Vitruvius publishing the formula in 25 BC, Hadrian's unreinforced Pantheon dome (128 AD, still the largest of its kind), and a popular myth about a "lost" Roman recipe that a 2023 MIT study actually debunks. From there: a Leeds bricklayer named Joseph Aspdin patenting "Portland cement" in 1824, a gardener named Joseph Monier reinforcing flowerpots with iron in 1867, the Ingalls Building in Cincinnati (1903) proving concrete skyscrapers wouldn't collapse, the Hoover Dam's 125-year cooldown problem, the Atlantic Wall built by forced labor, Brutalism's rise and fall, and the modern crisis: concrete cancer, the 2021 Surfside collapse, and an industry that emits more CO2 than aviation. The Romans built something that heals itself. We built something that's designed to expire. SOURCES 1. MIT News — "Riddle solved: Why was Roman concrete so durable?"
