  As a kid I thought Sparta was awesome but as an adult, every new bit I learn about them is somehow more horrific than the last bit

  Long ago when I was watching &quot;300&quot; with my friends and they were suddenly all fans of ancient Sparta and wanted everything to be about Sparta and were in love with romanticized version of them from that movie, I, the resident know it all history buff of the group would say it was a supremely entertaining movie that I loved to watch but its nothing at all what Sparta was like and one of the things I pointed out was that all those non cloak wearing people in the city they show were slaves. Thats the reason why the Spartan army stayed behind, it wasnt because of some paid off &quot;councilor&quot;, or because the Oracle said not to march, even if that was the public reason. Its because 80 percent of Sparta&apos;s population were state owned slaves that the citizenry were terrified would rise up and revolt anytime the army traveled far from the city. That often took the wind out of their sails. Then of course actually describing what the Agoge actually required young boys to do and how they were punished if they didn&apos;t as well.

  I find it odd that Plutarch thought that the krypteia originated in the 4th century bc, if he knew Plato thought it originated hundreds of years prior, primarily because Plato was born in the 4th century. Surely if they came about a decade or so before he was born he wouldn’t have thought they had hundreds of years of history at that point, the only way I can reconcile these two as of this moment is that the krypteia likely existed before then but were possibly reformed after the revolt

  Reading about what the Spartans, the enslavement of the helots and what was required to keep them in bondage, is yet another example of a life lesson I have an internalized: &nbsp;Being an a$$hole is exhausting; being a decent human being is WAY easier way to go through life.

  Great episode! &nbsp;The Spartans&apos; true history is laughably distorted in popular media but the reality is way more interesting.

  Keep in mind that although Plato was Athenian, he admired Sparta.

  It would make sense that the Krypteia would change rolls or have multiple purposes. &nbsp;Have them go out and survive in times of peace and call them back home to act as scouts during wartime, or two phases of the same right of passage: first you send a year surviving, then spend a year scouting. &nbsp;Just some ideas.
