I can attest this is a 70's hit. I got married in November 1979 and this was everywhere on the radio. My late wife and I Honeymooned in Destin Florida. This was playing on every station and in every place that had music. We had Pina' Coladas and joked about us just starting our marriage and this song describing a couple on the verge of a breakup. In all the years since, every time we'd hear this song we were right back on our Honeymoon, young and carefree. I lost my wife to cancer in 2021. We were married just shy of 42 years. When I hear it now it's very hard not to cry. A lot of people hate it and think it's just commercial corn but it holds a special place for me.

It’s endearing that he’s still so enthused and excited by this song 45yrs later. He seems like the kinda guy you’d want to have a beer with sitting in the backyard.

Whenever this song came on the radio, my dad would say, "Ah, the heartwarming song about two people cheating on each other - with each other!"

Being able to switch syllables to match the beat on the fly, is talent.

At 59 years old I have heard this song for most of my life. In 2008 my wife and I were on a cruise to Mexico for our honeymoon. They played this song on the PA on the Lido deck and almost everyone was singing along. We have been on at least a dozen cruises and have heard this song on every single one. We have heard this song played in Jamaica, Belize, in the Caribbean, and have even heard it in Honduras, and several other places. But have NEVER heard it and not see everyone singing along. Even people who didn't speak English were singing along. Great interview Professor. Have a Great day everybody.😎

One of the best description of how to create a once in a lifetime song. He really caught lightning in a bottle.

I've heard Rupert give several interviews about the making of this song and every time he is as excited about it today as he has been since it's creation.

His follow up hit, HIM, is a terrific pop song (I prefer it to the Pina Colada Song).

I was a kid when Escape first came out and it had everything, a great story with a twist, chill music, amazing melodies, a singer-songwriter on form and clearly loving what he was doing, clever wordplay, and a timeless vibe. And as a kid, I had no idea what a pina colada even was. Thank you Rupert Holmes

As a snobby rock drummer for more than half a century, I never really cared for this song, but I have to say, this is one of my favorite videos from you, Professor. And as a recording artist, I now have a greater appreciation for this song. I can’t wait to share it with my wife. 😁 Keep up the great work! 🥂🍾🍹

When I was an 18yr old freshman in college in 1980, I went on a date with an older girl. We were in a restaurant and the server asked us if we wanted anything from the bar. My date instantly ordered a daiquiri. Being underage and caught off guard, the only thing I could think of was a pina colada because of this song. I had never had one, and have never ordered one again.
