  Back in ye olden days, &quot;alchemists&quot; would take a kettle, fill it with their magical concoction (mostly water), a few small pieces of silver, and boil it in front of the lord&apos;s eyes. A little later they would remove the lid, and there it was - actual gold in the kettle! <br>They did this by using a glob of wax to seal a couple of small gold nuggets to the top of the lid of the kettle beforehand, the heat would melt the wax after some time, and the gold would plummet into the kettle. <br>They made a show of this, of course, and ended up getting hired by the lord, on quite the salary, and were provided lots of silver to produce more gold. Milking this as long as they could, making excuses, citing more time or materials needed, they eventually took a hike with the funds they&apos;d acquired, never to be seen again.<br><br>This worked hundreds of years ago, and it&apos;s still working today. Except the modern hucksters are less inventive.

  I&apos;ve heard that scam emails are intentionally written using bad grammar and several misspellings to weed out all of the people intelligent enough to deduct from that that it&apos;s a scam.

  A thing to note: the belief that &quot;I&apos;m smart enough to avoid being tricked&quot; or &quot;I can tell when something&apos;s a fraud&quot; are themselves exploitable beliefs. I have heard that some confidence tricksters use others to assuage the feelings of shame and broken pride.

  Its not just MMOs, steam has been plagued with asset flips for years. Those con artists will try to ban and sue anyone who exposes them.
