Why Parrots Might Be More Human Than We Think — The Science Will Surprise You

    I am absolutely certain that parrots grieve. I took Jake my dusky headed conure to my childhood home after my aunt passed. He flew into every room of the house looking for her. When he couldn't find her, he landed on the back of her chair and cried like a baby (he learned how to cry when my niece was an infant). He also grieved when each of our dogs passed. He continued to call for them and looked all over the house for them. This continued for months. He definitely knew his name, responded appropriately, and made his likes and dislikes known. Jake blessed our lives for 35 years, and there will always be a parrot shaped spot on my heart for him.

    My African Grey, Groucho, was in the living room, I was in the kitchen and opened the refrigerator door. Groucho said, "I hear food!" Nobody talks like that, she had just made the connection to the sound and knew what it meant;

    Maybe the question should not be "Are they mimicking us?" but rather, "Why our inflated arrogance to think we have a monopoly on intelligence or even communicable language?"

    Oh, my parrot, blue & gold macaw is quite the joker. He understands more than he can say.

    well dogs and cats now press buttons and talk in sentences now, asking questions, making demands, wanting things, needing things and asking, as well as talking about their dreams etc.

    A question that had nothing at all to do with your content, from 1993 I have been lucky enough to go every week to a tiny island in the BVI named Saba Rock, they had a rock inside the bar with a sea waterfall, lobsters down there but 3 or 4 parrots on some kind of tree branches, every week I would buy a little bag of peanuts for them.

I think there was 3 cockatoos and one huge but I mean really huge macaw
I tried to feed them equally but of course the macaw was always getting double portion.

That until one night he dropped the peanut and took my finger in its en and call it luck or feeling I realised right away that he wasn’t trying to bite me so I let him keep my finger in his beak, the big mama at the bar tells me ho don’t worry he must like you is trying to get to know you !

It lasted for a good 4 or 5 minutes but the funniest beside having all the guys and girl from the crew coming to ask he he had bitten me was that he was touching my finger with his tongue, and gently moving up and down my finger
From that night on every other week when we would go to the island I had my show going for the newly embarked crew, I would feed him a few peanuts then offer him my hand with my fingers widely spread so he could choose the one he wanted to explore.

Long later I was told that this was a form of trusting ans wish to know you better from a parrot.

Do you know if that is true ?
