There is this famous story of a chemist who hid his Nobel prize from the Nazis. They were going around stealing gold and he dissolved the medal and kept it on the shelf. They didn’t bother taking beaker of random solution and he was able to get it remade after the war.

5:00 As far as allergies go nickel IS fairly common. Allergies to metals themselves aren't super common, but enough that people shouldn't be surprised about it. I'd bet half of the comments were just them not asking the right question. Not "How are you allergic to jewelry?" but "What part of the jewelry are you allergic to?" should be more what they want, I'm guessing. Old girlfriend had a nickel allergy, aunt has a silver allergy (we always joke that she's a werewolf), so I understand what you're going through a bit there. Oh, also I looked it up because it was bugging me, nickel is actually the MOST common metal allergy in the world, at least according to the Mayo Clinic.
EDIT: Also, at 30:50 you asked what that piece of stuff was? It's more kaowool (kay-oh-wool), which is just the stuff that is lining the furnace. It's basically for heat retention while not being easily affected itself by heat. He did say it, but it was quick and only I think once, so no big on missing it.
EDIT 2: Also also, when he says he was really careful, he means that he kept track of all the sanded stuff and the slag and all that, because he's aware that would contain some of it. Hence his confusion. Otherwise you'd probably be correct here.

I was under the assumption that he reused what he sanded off, that would explain why he's confused.

I learned I was allergic to nickel when I wore this belt as a kid with these spike studs all along the edge. They weren’t sharp, more like very shallow and not sharp pyramids. Anyways my entire stomach all around has a bad rash.

Though I’m a guy who doesn’t wear jewelry so it’s not a big concern. But still even for watches and stuff I get a rash wearing them if I’m not careful what to get. I just don’t really wear watches anymore anyways.
