all in my head, I noticed the original can be rewritten (x^3/x + x/x = 2) which becomes (x^2 + 1 = 2) so x^2 = 2 - 1 = 1, so x = ±1

By inspection in about 2 seconds in my head. But then I spent 10 years in college studying engineering. I'm always glad to see math and science topics on the internet.

I solved it the second way. It made the most sense when I saw the x's in all of the terms.
