How the Harry Potter Films Ruined Draco Malfoy

Honestly I’ve always liked book canon Draco as a character. Not because there’s anything particularly lovely about him, but because he’s so entertaining. I do admire his passion for ragebaiting everyone he doesn’t like. Composing an entire song & getting everyone to sing it to mock Ron was serious commitment

He's the perfect example of a character being carried by it's actor, fanfiction & fangirls.

The movies also softened Snape, not showing the worst of his bullying.

I find it hilarious that Harry can always tell what Draco is saying when everybody is eating at the Great Hall, even though the Slytherin table is described as being at the opposite end of the Gryffindor table, with the two other house tables in between them. Goes to show just how loud Draco actually talks.

The amount of Dracos obsession to make Harry's life worse is incredible, in book 5 he makes the 'weasley is our king' badges FOR THE WHOLE HOUSE OF SLYTHERIN and texts a song that he rehearses with everyone just to torment Ron and therefore Harry.. the amount of effort

I disagree with your Draco redemption part being ambiguous because Ron and Hermione had no disguise. I think one of them, Bellatrix (if I am not wrong), even asks Draco if they are Ron and Hermione and Draco hesitated and said maybe, I don’t know. It was clear he deliberately saved them. The reason is ambiguous but I think it is because he had seen the worst of Voldemort and has already come to understand thats not what he wanted.

About the Malffoy manor scene, I think it's very clear in the books that Draco knowingly saved Harry. It's clear because Hermione and Ron was there too. At some point Bellatrix asks Draco: "isn't it the moodblood and the Weasly boy that are Potter's friends"? And Draco says something like: "yeah maybe, I'm not sure". There was no reason for him not to recognize Ron and Hermione. He clearly figured the situation out, but was reluctant to give them away. Now why did he do it is unclear. Personally I interpreted it like Malffoy actually cares for them deep down.

One thing I think fueled Draco’s animosity towards Hermione was because she was a muggleborn and good at her subjects. That was my impression when reading it. Like actually jealous of her.

What I liked and hated about the Malfoys, no matter how criminal, evil or dispicable they are, they somehow manage to escape Azkeban or any deserved punishment for their actions. This is very reflective of many wealthy people in real life, who are corrupt and awful but somehow always avoid the full punishment of the law. Utterly frustrating but a reflection of real life.

BUT the movies brought us- ‘scared potter?’… ‘You. Wish.’

I'm pretty sure that Draco would recognise Ron and Hermione, even if Harry's face is distorted. He still intensely dislikes Harry, but he doesn't actually want people to die. Like he thinks he'd find this extreme end amusing, but he really wouldn't when faced with it.

He, like Tom Riddle, is an example of how people can forgive everything if a person has a pretty face
