How Your Turn To Die Makes Choices Count

One of the things I love the most about YTTD is how you never know for sure which choices will or won't matter. In most visual novels you quickly get a sense of which choices will heavily impact what happens next and which ones will just trigger a slightly different dialogue, but in YTTD you're constantly afraid of accidentally killing someone for making a wrong move.

17 minutes in and i cant get over the juxtaposition of the happy dancing vtuber and a teenager watching her friend die right in front of her

little fun fact about the alice dies/reko lives route!
during the events of the minigame stuff, if you talk to alice, you get a chance to witness a scene where he repairs reko's bongos that had broken and attempts to return them to her to make peace between the two. but by this point, reko was already replaced with the fake reko. because of the thing about ai memories being updated but not their feelings, the fake reko throws the bongos to the ground, still mad at alice.
if you manage to get this cutscene, alice will hold out long enough after his torso is exploded to see the real reko be released and cry over him, and he smiles with tears in his eyes as he dies.

edit: also, there's NO way this got me crying over the joe ai scene AGAIN. EVERY DAMN TIME.

An extra bit of character analysis I remember hearing from somewhere: One of the reasons Nao stops you from pressing the button is because she doesn't want you to feel at fault for her death. This can be inferred also when she pushes the fake Reko into the pit.

i remember playing this when i was about 14 - 15 and quite literally REFUSING to play the game after chapter 1 for a whole week. joe and kai are some of my favourite characters in the game, and with joe specifically, the idea that you could save him if you just tried a LITTLE harder, but in trying to save him you only made him suffer longer.. it absolutely CRUSHED me. pretty sure i installed an autoclicker just to try and save him😭

Spoiler for Chapter 2 part 1

Fun fact, Alice does not always die without knowing that Reko is alive in said route. If you help him with his side quest of getting the bongos and trying to give them to Reko to make up with her, by a miracle he briefly wakes up for just a moment and is able to see that Reko is alive. He dies with a smile on his face, it's incredibly bittersweet.

I do love how Gin has one of the lowest chances of survival, only managing to survive thanks to everyone else. Then throwing himself in near the end because he feels like he's not ever defended anyone else. I genuinely thought that Gin wouldn't survive that due to how low his chances were shown to be.

the "save doll-reko or gin" trial actually has a 3rd choice, which is "you are too stupid to figure out how to figure out reko is fake via the trial, even tho you know she is fake, causing you to not even get the choice to sacrifice her"
i played this twice, and i am still too dumb to figure out how to actually win that trial lmfao

Teaching the player that their choices do matter in chapter 2 (and the end of chapter 1) to help sell the illusion of choice in chapter 3 is so cruel but absolutely genius at the same time. The roulette banquet would be nowhere near as amazing if it wasn't railroaded but also because it hides the fact that you can't "lose" either. I genuinely cannot put into words how much I love it

In the game’s files, there’s a cut scenario where the player is actually allowed to vote for Keiji in the second main game and force a tie between Kanna and Sou. In that deleted scene, a tie that doesn’t include the Sacrifice instead triggers a revote. So Nao and Sara, the two characters that didn’t vote for Kanna or Sou, now have to choose to vote for one of them. But since Nao has two votes, Sara basically dodges responsibility and Nao has to pick.

We don’t get to see what choice Nao would have made, but my personal headcanon is that she, out of anger and spite, would have given one vote to each and forced Sara to choose again. I think this would actually have been very effective narratively, because a) the player still has to kill one of them and the illusion of choice would be devastating, and b) this would parallel the choice at the end of 2-1. Only this time, Nao would refuse to carry the burden.

That doll Sara theory is compelling but as noted before if you fail the first trial as Joe there's blood when Sara is crushed, and blood if you fail the mini games.
And note Dolls do not bleed
