I’ve noticed in and out of my periods of severe depression, the way my family treats me changes. When I am up and productive, they are kinder. When I am bed rotting, they are cold and distant. I can feel their judgement. Makes you feel like a burden. This story feels like an extreme example of that in a way. Even your own family loses their empathy for you when you don’t do what is expected sometimes.

It is not only about the family, but about a broader logic in society: the value of a person is derived from their usefulness.

The family not seeking help is the horror point of focus to me.

Nobody bother to ask greg's boss what he may have exposed greg to that may have him turn like that.
Nobody bother to bring in the doctor so he can at least know this can happen.
Nobody and this is the real messed up part, EVEN BOTHER TO TRY TO COMMUNICATE WITH GREG!
They all just collectively agree to shove the poor guy under a carpet and let him perish until the father get a big brain moment and decide making things worst was a good idea.

The family moving on at the end made me sick.

I listened to this book after I was sent to the hospital from a blown intestine and lupus flair up I immediately needed 2 surgeries and woke up from a 3 day coma. I was unable to move, eat, drink, or even walk. It really helped me get through it because the whole time my wife was there for me

This is how my family saw me for years as an atm machine, then as a bug when I stopped supplying them with money. They treated me like a bug. Except my baby sister, she still loves me.

Interesting how only after Gregor's death are his family members referred to by their names, as if their identities shift from being centered around dealing with the creature to finally living their own lives for themselves.

The first time I read this I hadnt truly considered the three lodgers and their role. Now, I recognize their placement in the story to be a symbolic example of society and how cold and uncaring consumers can be.

Sure, they're paying but they have little to no regard for the family and treat them like a transaction. There is no warm humanity to be seen. And the moment you think there is (when they first seem interested in Grete's violin) you quickly realize that their interest was nothing more than a simple curiosity that they ultimately had no use for.
Then their demand for cleanliness, judgement over food, etc. Then of course when they discover Gregor and their immediate disgust as they refuse to pay the bill they owe but have the audacity to stay another night and ask where breakfast is in the morning. Entitled. Pure economic rationality. They are consumer society stripped of illusion.
