  I speculate that his reticence to tell anyone about himself is, atleast, partially due to a realiztion how our words are so rarely understood, or, atleast, not completely understood. No matter how eloquent one may write, or speak, it is not the same as the thoughts, the emotions that are behind the expressed words.

  This man was a genius. His depiction of Spain after the civil war is on par with Picasso's Guernica. I wish I could see one in person. Thanks for posting.

  It was Paul Thek who gave Susan Sontag the germ of her famous essay when he said "Why can't people just look at art? I'm against interpretation."  I think that was Burra's point too, which is why of course he didn't get along with critcs. Quite funny to see even this excellent presenter succumbing to the temptation to tell us what it all means.

The very first acrylic painting I ever did in my life (in Paris, in December of 1995) was looking out of a window of a friend&apos;s flat, at THAT VERY ROOFTOP SCENE, of that silhouetted tower, to the right of the middle of the frame. It&apos;s a very simple, small painting of the roofs with that tower (from the same perspective, although, from a floor below), as seen through a window. The not very extraordinary painting hangs on my wall now. I never thought I would see that view ever again. What a strange surprise.

  Burra depicted both the joy and exuberance of life as well as its horrors and tragedy in a well-rounded perspective on the human condition. There is such love evident in his earlier work for the world he observes.

  I just adore Andrew Graham-Dixon. His enthousiasm is so addictive, you just fall in love with whatever art subject he is presenting. His shows are one of the reasons I became enamoured with 19th century American painting. And again, he does it with this painter. Thank you for posting this.

  Why have I never even heard of Edward Burra. After seeing his work in this video, it really doesn&apos;t make any sense.
