When you described 80’s and 90’s as vintage, I all of a sudden felt very old 😂

I cannot stress this enough with your RV search...America is flippin' HUGE!!!! There are long long LONG stretches of road where there are no mechanics, no gas stations, nothing, and no one, and your cell phone will definitely lose signal, and guess where your old vintage 1980s RV is going to try and kill itself. Unless you are well versed in RV repair work, you do not want this headache, especially in the dead of summer where it's insanely hot. You need a sound working vehicle above all else and definitely get a paid inspector out to check it over before purchase because sellers desperate to get rid of theirs will tell you everything you want to hear. I see the vision, I hear the vision, but ultimately the trip is about the adventure and making memories, most of which you don't want to start with, well we broke down for the 10th time this week. Not worth that.

Hey fellow Brit!! We are 5 months into our 6 month tour of America in our RV and we’re having a blast!!
YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!
just a few points to note;
- Insuring the RV on an international drivers license can be difficult and expensive. I found Progressive to be the most helpful.
- If you go into any DMV office you can pick up a Drivers Manual which will give you the laws and instructions for signs etc. Note, watch out for 4 way Stop signs, this means all vehicles have to stop at a cross roads and the first vehicle to arrive will have priority, plus giving way to the vehicle on the right.
Comments above regarding the size and age of the RV are very real. Make sure you’re happy with some limitations if buying an older RV.
- Don’t forget that $15k buys your RV, but then you’ll need to register it. This will cost you the tax rate % of the cost of the RV in which ever state you buy it in (CA has one of the highest tax rates) PLUS the registration fee.
- Consider your route in advance so you can find campgrounds. The cost ranges from $30-40 a night up to $100-200 a night. We only plan ahead by about 4 days to a week to we remain flexible, but sometimes “reasonable” camping charges can take some searching.
- We use the on-line RV Life app for both planning and navigation. Although it has some weak points, it’s been pretty good.
- We’re currently in Colorado in the Rocky Mountains, and we’ve visited 38 states so far, and visited 30 National Parks.
If you want to chat and have any questions just let me know.
By the way, we’re documenting our trip on our YouTube channel, so feel free to check it out for any inspiration.

I think Evie needs to be 100% in charge here, I see a lot of me in you, and that is someone who buys with their heart instead of their head.
Follow the advice elsewhere, get it inspected, and make sure that if things need fixing, there is someone available to fix them before you buy.

You must stop at every stop sign, no matter what. It's not like the Uk where you can roll through. The flashing lights are just to get your attention. No lights, stop. Lights, stop. Every state. Every stop. Stop. First one there goes first. If it's a yield sign, you can roll through if nobody is coming. You can also turn right on a red light after stopping first unless it says "No turn on red", but only if nobody is coming, you must yield when turning right on a red light. Many big cities are no turn on red at every intersection, but there's always a sign "No turn on red".

Az born and raised. You can come to Sun City to look at vehicles. Usually you will get well kept vehicles that wives will sell when their husbands pass.

Honestly, you should spend money renting a few different options for 3-4 nights each to see if you even like it, how they handle, or if the space is comfortable. It'll cost some money but you absolutely do not want to spend money on these things based on vibes. They can rapidly become money pits. If you're hell-bent on getting vintage you need to have it thoroughly inspected by a third party inspector, identity quality mechanics who can work on it when something inevitably breaks, and make sure that parts can still be sourced for repairs. This is a serious investment, far more substantial over time than a car or truck. Don't let the romance of it blind you to the commitment

Make sure you run the a/c and if the seller says it just needs refilled A. If it needs refilled there's a likely chance it leaks and B. Older models use an old refrigerant you can only get refilled at specialty shops!

If I had to pick, I'd buy an RV in Arizona before Cali. It is more complicated in Cali, higher taxes, and wetter conditions. Phoenix is actually a perfect place to buy one- dry, no salt and water intrustion, and provisions for out of state buyers to purchase it. Las Vegas would be my other choice before Cali.
