I was lucky enough to watch an interview with the late director, Peter Del Monte, one of the special features on the Blu-ray Disc.
According to him, a lot of the film's problems, especially towards the end, were due to him clashing with the producers, who wanted something more conventional, whereas Del Monte wanted to make a gothic fairytale in the style of an art house film. He also wasn't happy about how they changed his ending, which was originally more ambiguous, to a more conventional happy one. The producers also weren't that keen on casting Gary McCleery as the male lead since he was an unknown and didn't think he fit the part.
While I do see both sides of the argument (art films are very niche genre and are often misunderstood by both critics and audiences due to their unconventional structure), however, I do find myself siding more with Del Monte.
And when you consider how hectic the late 80s were for Eastern Europe, it's kind of a miracle this was film was made at all.
