Guts is Griffith's opposite.
Griffiths is driven by his dream, and imprisoned by it.
Guts has no goal other than survival, so in Griffith's view Guts is free while he is not.

Griffith was totally in love with Guts. He has no practical need to keep Guts around by the time Guts decides to leave the Band of the Hawk; Doldrey is won, Griffith has favor with the king, and he has eliminated all his political enemies. And yet, while on the cusp of realizing his dream, Griffith snaps and throws it all away.

Whether he accept it or not, Griffith needs Guts in order to bear the burden of his dream. As much as Griffith embodies the ruthless strongman of political ambition, he is still human. Perhaps Griffith had been able to subordinate all other desires and emotions to the singular dream of becoming king, but meeting Guts changes something in Griffith. Suddenly, Griffith begins to show a degree of affection and preferential treatment (as well as risking his own life) for Guts in a way he has never done for anyone else.

Romantic or not, sexual or not---it's still love.

I think he just desperately needed a sidekick that he saw as a real person and not just an expendable minion like how he saw the rest of them. And then when Guts chose to walk his own path instead of being Griffiths side kick, it shattered his ego and left a massive empty hole in Griffiths narcissistic needy soul
