I've been a Civil War bore since I was 9yrs old...in two months, I'll be 80...this is a really cool program...very informative,  especially for people who are not sure if they want to go down the Civil War rabbithole...glad I came across this program!

That's interesting how Grant stopped his soldiers from firing the celebratory shots after Lee surrendered - like he didn't want to rub it in. I guess after the brutality, he saw it as a pretty solemn occasion and reuniting as countrymen again, he didn't want to taunt and antagonize.

The reality of war is never as glorious as textbooks make it seem. This video captures the raw truth. Respect to every soul who lived through it.

My great great uncle survived 14 months and five battles in the civil war. He was in the 24th Michigan.

I am a nurse. I have researched illness, the wounded, surgery and care of soldiers in the war. Large percentage of wounded Union men did receive anesthesia for amputations. Unfortunately southern doctors didn’t have the access to drugs and supplies which meant many “Rebs” were not treated as well!

I used to belong to a hardcore reenacting unit. We didn’t use tents, our beds were just a rubber cloth and blankets that we would carry on us. We would sleep exposed cold, rain, and mosquitoes. Now we only would do this for a weekend and it was brutal to do just that. Image doing that every day. No wonder why so many died from exposure.

Sherman did not see anything in Gettysburg. He was not there.

My great grandfather joined the Tennessee Militia in May 1861. He was wounded and captured in Pickett's Charge.  He was sent to a union prison at Pea Patch Island where he stayed until 1865.   His little brother (age14-15) joined in Nov 1861.  H e was captured at Fort Donelson and sent to a union prison where he later got sick and died of some disease.  If memory serves,  he was buried in a mass grave near Chicago.  Regarding pone, my family absolute favorite #1 food was corn pone.  If memory serves it was made with corn meal, some water, oil, and a pinch of salt.  We could eat that stuff all day long.  I think the recipe came from the Algonquin Indians.  (just because my ancestors were from the south doesn't mean they didn't get around). :)
