  Fun etymology fact: the word &quot;black&quot; comes from the PIE root *bhleg-, which is related to words about burning and brilliance. &quot;Black&quot; evolved from the root by referencing how things turn dark when burned. However(!), when things burn long enough, they turn to ash, so *bhleg- is also the root of &quot;blank&quot;, which becomes the word for &quot;white&quot; in many languages (e.g. &quot;blanco&quot;)

  About the chess variant Michael&apos;s daughter invented. I am a big fan of chess variants, especially inventing your own and I recognize the need to add ad hoc rules to make it work.<br>The variant I know that is most similar to &apos;rainbow chess&apos; is &apos;raindrop chess&apos;, invented by Jozias Hillenkamp. I don&apos;t think this variant is well known, perhaps even only available in the Netherlands (Where Jozias is from)<br><br>If I recall correctly it works like this: <br>Both players start with a deck of cards with all of your chess pieces (and some jokers).<br>You take turns drawing a card, you take the piece depicted on the card and can place the piece somewhere on the board (with some restrictions about check/promotion perhaps)<br>When you have drawn and placed your king you get to choose between moving a piece and drawing a card.<br><br>I remember some of my young chess students enjoying this variant because the added luck factor allows them to beat stronger opponents or even their trainers!

  Physicist here about the Schwinger Effect:<br><br>If you have strong enough source of light, the light will turn into matter: electrons and positrons. So pair production doesn&apos;t allow you to get arbitrarily large amounts of light.<br><br>This matter will also gravitate, so if you have a strong enough source of light producing matter fast enough, it will still collapse into a black hole. Black wins out again.<br><br>However, black holes do radiate light from hawking radiation. After a long enough time it will almost completely evaporate and, possibly, turn into something in a superposition of being a white hole and a black hole.

  The white keys are absolutely more interesting than the black keys on a piano. With only black keys, you are stuck with a 5 note pentatonic scale that will get boring fast. With only white, you have every note in the C major scale. Base your song around a different note, say A for a minor tune, and you can create all different colors and moods of songs with just white keys
