Gödel Proved Mathematics Can Never Prove Itself

In September 1930, in a conference room in Königsberg, a twenty-four-year-old Kurt Gödel ended David Hilbert's programme to place mathematics on provably solid ground — with a single offhand remark, to a room that did not react, one day before Hilbert stood in front of a radio microphone in the same city and promised that we must know, we will know. This is the story of the theorem mathematicians find genuinely unbearable, and the one feature nobody expects: the failure has no warning. If a contradiction exists inside the foundations every working mathematician uses, nothing in the structure can tell us in advance. The only signal we would ever receive is the day everything breaks. So how would we know? Covering Hilbert's twenty-three problems and the collapse of his programme, Gödel numbering and the diagonal lemma, Paul Bernays finishing in 1939 the proof Gödel only sketched, von Neumann's independent discovery, Gentzen's epsilon-nought consistency proof, Feferman's intensionality loophole, ZFC and the large cardinal hierarchy, Frege, Quine's New Foundations, the Kunen inconsistency, Voevodsky, and what Lean can and cannot verify. 0:00 Intro 2:00 The Sentence Nobody Can Prove 9:35 The Second Problem 14:15 Mathematics With Pebbles 21:05 Herr Warum 32:35 Making Arithmetic Talk 38:35 The Sentence That Names Itself 44:50 Two Paragraphs 49:20 Ten Weeks Too Late 57:10 The Man Who Went Furthest 1:09:00 One Page of Axioms 1:11:45 A Ladder With No Top 1:17:55 How It Would Break 1:23:15 Systems That Actually Failed 1:33:25 It Was Never Confined 1:41:10 The Ones Who Still Ask 1:48:30 Gödel's Disjunction 1:53:15 The Verifier Was Removed Grounded in primary sources, including: Kurt Gödel, Über formal unentscheidbare Sätze der Principia Mathematica und verwandter Systeme I (1931) — Monatshefte für Mathematik und Physik, vol. 38 David Hilbert, Mathematical Problems (1902) — Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, vol. 8 David Hilbert, Naturerkennen und Logik (1930) — Königsberg radio address David Hilbert and Paul Bernays, Grundlagen der Mathematik, vol.
