  As an American it’s sad to say that America has been going down the same road for decades. Especially all the wars we’ve fought for “Our Greatest Ally”.

  I think that the best qualification for government is to be a romantic Warrior Poet. Or a Corporal and Painter/Wagner Enthusiast. Or perhaps for Britain it would be a WW1 flying ace like Sir Oswald Mosley.

  Army officers in India were worried about the degeneration of the British stock due to urbanisation and the democratic spirit, this is one reason they looked to the martial races from what was then North West India, because they were more rural and religious with no awareness of European progressive ideas. Francis Yeats-Brown is also interesting in this respect and his book 'Bengal Lancer'.

  My father was a pretty high up beurocrat in Canberra. Working as the director of Transport Economics.<br>I remember us watching Yes Minister when the subject of generalist Ministers was part of the joke.<br>Interestingly, despite him being a former engineer, was in agreement that generalists make better managers.<br>He would argue that the train guy would not make a good transport minister. The reason being is that he is a train guy and would lean too heavily on trains in the transport mix. Rather than road, shipping or air.<br>He apparently ran into various experts who vastly overestimated the utility of various transport modes.<br>One of his biggest jobs was trying to explain why a very fast train would be an economic disaster.

  This guy was absolutely right. The British empire was amateurish compated to the more competent germans aswell as the more competent white colonies.
