  Nothing is scarier than random violence.  We can’t prevent it, or see it coming, we can’t stop it or reason with it.  It is the brutality and randomness and coldness with which Chigur acts that’s makes him such an effective villain.

  According to a January 2018 article in Business Insider, a group of psychiatrists studied 400 movies and identified 126 psychopathic characters. They chose Javier Bardem's portrayal of Anton Chigurh as the most clinically accurate portrayal of a psychopath.

  I always thought he was supposed to represent death and fate. Even the way he moves is slow and haunting like the grim reaper. He's inevitable. He could also represent consequences

  One could argue that if Moss had made an immoral choice and gone back to the woman's room with her that he would not have been in his room when his killers came for him.  The film shows conventional morality as an outdated decision-making process.  Chigurh addresses this directly through his line, "If the rule you followed led you to this (death), of what use was the rule?"  He's a manifestation of fate, but also chance...and chance is indifferent to morality.  It's simply of making the right choice of heads or tails on a coin that has already fallen.
