  I was a full grown adult when the first season aired, and I remember thinking how irresponsible this show was and how it romanticized suicide. This show was basically every suicidal teen’s wish fulfillment fantasy come true—  the whole school is in turmoil over your death, everyone is listening to your tapes and clues left behind and agonizing over it, everyone who wronged you is regretful or learns a lesson and is affected by your death for the rest of their lives, and you’re somehow still around in ghost or spiritual form gloating over everyone’s comeuppance.

  Carley doing half a season is the real world version of putting butter on top of our popcorn so we have to leave the theater mid-movie to get more

  also famously her suicide in the book wasn’t as graphic as how they depicted in the show. they just chose to do that!

  One of the things that irritates me the most about this show is how it completely misses the point of the book. In the book, Hannah wasn't a central figure in most of the characters lives prior to death - Clay wasn't in love with her, they just kissed once at a party. It was all about how you never know what someone is going through, and small slights that you think are inconsequential can really hurt someone. I don't feel like the show portrayed that message at all.

  Unfortnate fact: suicide rates in teens immediately increased following the release of this show. As a therapist, it too often that we STILL hear stories from teens in which their suicide attempt or self harm was triggered by this show :/

  I never read the book so I can’t speak on it, but the show really came across to me as depicting ending your own life as a good way to get revenge on people who have harmed you in life. And when the primary demographic of the show is teenagers that’s incredibly dangerous, just like showing a graphic sui*cide is incredibly dangerous. The entire show just felt like an exercise in trauma-porn.

  The premise for this show is so counterintuitive. It weirdly validates Hannahs sucide, even in death, she is still everywhere and is able to fulfil her revenge fantasy, even the premise implies there are right reasons to want to end your life. Surely, the show was everything a suicidal teen shouldn't be seeing
