Japan’s Semiconductor Photoresist Monopoly

I used to ship Photoresist, importing from Japan and shipping around the world to approved labs. A gallon of resist could easily cost $10,000 dollars, and had to be shipped cold and Hazmat. Bottles were overpacked, even when the bottle was IATA/DOT approved, because it was best to be insulated. Though my clients swore it worked better if you let it warm up for a bit. The shipments were always tightly monitored and I only shipped through known parties; proven logisticians, pilots, teamsters who were reliable and honest. Getting a bottle of resist could take many months, and I often spent snow days sitting on a frozen dock waiting for a trucker to show up; the clients could not afford to lose even a day and I often spent those cold days with patent holding scientists. I liked working with them, they had no problem standing in the cold with me and working hard jobs.

I think Japan did Very Very well to acquire JSR and not let the company go to a foreign who know what fund.

It is an extreme high technology. The semi condictor industry has never come this far so quickly without it. Well done, Japan, I appreciate it.

You know you have a good thing when the Government decides to nationalise you to protect you from private equity.

Japan: Photoresistance-resistance is futile.

As a fan of the channel, and an employee of JSR, it was satisfying for my company to be mentioned. And to learn more about the history of resists.

I need an Asianometry pin that's just a silicon wafer with the words "Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography" etched into it.

It's funny, I work at Intel and pass by a Tokyo Ohka Kogyo building on the way to work because it's just 3 miles down the road from the campus I work at. I had no idea what that company did until now!

My mother worked at AMD in their Thin Film department at the Sunnyvale HQ for decades. I used to get to play with giant standardized well-made wafer boxes as a kid. 😂

I love lava cake 🍰

"The government recognized how insane it would be to let private equity take over the industry". That is one smart government. Private equity has ruined almost every aspect of American life. From the store on the corner and the company that does my landscaping to the pharmaceutical companies that make my medication and the doctors I see.
