What was your first Dragon Quest game?

All draconian first play through of DQ11 was the best turnbased RPG I've ever played hands down. It was challenging as fuck, but so satisfying to get good at. Each time I got stuck, I thought I'd never be able to solve the fight but I eventually did and it was so good. 10/10 jrpg imo.

I'm playing through this right now on the Switch 2. It's plenty light-hearted, but has shockingly sad events that take place from time to time. I still have a ways to go, but I love how easy it is to pick up and play this game in small sessions even over weeks. The way it updates your current quest status when you boot up your save brings you up to speed on what your party was doing since you last saved. An incredibly memorable game that is a bit on the easy side.

This was my first Dragon Quest game as well, and I really think for me my only complaints are the OST not having enough variety, and Act 3 being kinda meh. But I have so much love for this game. I actually enjoyed the slower pace of Act 1. The structure made it feel episodic, like a Dragon Quest TV show could be made out of it lol. It honestly worked for me. But absolutely, Act 2 was the highlight, and as a whole felt like it led to a more proper ending then what Act 3 did with undoing so much

Dragon Quest 11 is simply a super good game. It may not be the greatest RPG game that many critics would considered because of how formulaic the series is known for. But it doesn't have to be and that's what make the franchise so good. It stays consistent and doesn't change much as to what other franchises suffers from; while also evolving on hardware for each gen and are still well quality games. Dragon Quest 11 is a fantastic starting point to those that never played the series or RPG'S in general and get into it really easily on how these games works and is more comfortable to experience.

If you want more Dragon Quest games, I recommend DQ3. Mainly the 2D-HD Remake one since it's been out for months now and easy to pick up. Same with 1 & 2 when those come.

Dragon quest 11 was my first. I have had played older jrpg's like ff 1 and 6 before.
Dq11 was most fun playing with tougher enemies on. Tried different strategies and switch up my build a couple times early game. Late act 2 and 3 you still become overpowered when you start rolling in the skill points.

in the original version of DQ11 you did not get to play as the other characters, I did not know they added that into the S version of the game. That is why for you it felt off when you went into act 3 - because those other character arcs never happened besides Hendriks I believe

Nice review! As a long-time Dragon Quest fan since playing DQ9 back in the DS era, I always love seeing new people experiencing the franchise for the first time; I think it's still a really underrated series outside of Japan. DQ11 is my all-time favorite JRPG now. "Generic masterpiece" is an apt description, but I think this game is the perfect example as to why execution matters far more than originality when it comes to telling an impactful story. Dragon Quest may be very formulaic and very goofy, but it's also very earnest. There's no hint of irony in its storytelling, and I find that very refreshing. The gameplay is also very refined despite not straying very far at all from its classic turn-based roots.

I'd recommend giving DQ5 and DQ7 a look next if you haven't journeyed farther into the franchise yet; those are my favorite DQ games after 11.
