I had this dream, ever since before I even landed in Vietnam, of reaching what a lot of people call the most beautiful city in the whole country, Da Lat. It sits up high in the mountains, surrounded by pine forests, and the temperature stays somewhere between fifteen and twenty five degrees year round, which is exactly the kind of weather I love, especially after weeks of sweating through the coastal heat everywhere else. But actually getting there turned into one of the funniest, most chaotic breakdowns of my entire trip. I'd only been in Vietnam about a week at that point, still staying in Nha Trang, when I bought myself a Honda Win for a hundred and seventy five dollars. Calling it a motorbike is generous, honestly, calling it a half motorcycle might be more accurate. I have no idea what year it was actually built, probably somewhere around the year I was born, judging by the state of it and the general vibe it gave off. But I decided, why not, let's just take this thing all the way to Da Lat and see what happens along the way. So I set off, full of confidence I probably shouldn't have had. First fifty kilometers, the bike is basically screaming at me the entire time, and I mean that almost literally, every rattle and groan and cough from the engine sounded like it was actively begging me to just leave it on the side of the road and continue on foot instead. But somehow we kept moving forward, slow and steady, right up until we hit this thirty kilometer mountain road full of tight switchbacks leading up toward Da Lat. And it was like the bike genuinely sensed what kind of climb was coming and decided it wanted absolutely no part of it. Right there, twenty meters short of a repair shop, it died completely. Just gave up on the spot, like it had planned the whole thing. Calling that place a repair shop is also pretty generous - it was basically a shed sitting in the middle of the jungle, some scattered tools lying around on a dirt floor, and one guy working there completely alone with no other customers in sight. When this Vietnamese mechanic saw me pushing my dying bike toward him, sweating and clearly exhausted, he just started laughing right away. Full on laughing, before he'd even taken a proper look at the engine or asked what happened. He offered to help anyway, pulled the whole engine apart piece by piece right there on the ground, and told me the repair would run me a hundred and fifty dollars total. I told him, man, I bought this entire bike for that exact price a week ago. He just laughed even harder at that, like it was the funniest thing he'd heard all week. But he insisted it was still a completely fair price for the parts and the labor involved, and that it would take him two full days to finish the whole job properly, which is why it cost what it did. The problem was, I didn't have two days to sit around waiting in a jungle shed with nothing to do and no real plan. So I pointed over at another bike parked nearby, a noticeably newer one, maybe from around 2014, with what looked like Japanese manufacturing stickers plastered on the side, though honestly who knows if those stickers were even real or just for show. I asked him, half joking at first, whether he'd consider trading bikes with me straight up, and I'd throw in some extra cash on top to sweeten the deal for him. He completely lost it laughing at that suggestion. Like, really lost it, doubled over, hands on his knees kind of laughing. And that got me laughing too, just off his reaction alone, and for a solid ten minutes straight we were both standing there in this random jungle shed, holding our stomachs, laughing at the sheer absurdity of the whole situation we'd somehow found ourselves in.
