Oh, how I wish Madrid would have been a good fit for them! I’d love to hang with them and Ana. A few takeaways: I’m so happy for Ana to have this international experience. My husband (then 57)and I (then 56) retired and moved from central NY to Madrid with 8 suitcases, golf clubs and our Golden Retriever in January 2025. I had been retired for less than 6 months with zero thoughts of moving, let alone to Spain. We have also burned the boat and consider ourselves immigrants. My husband was a Spanish teacher and his language proficiency helped immensely as I knew no Spanish. After teaching world history for 31 years, I didn’t expect my retirement to be as a language student, but here we are. And, ooooooh, is it humbling! And fun. And frustrating. And rewarding. Their apartment is beautiful. I especially appreciate that they brought the art they loved. We did too and it is a comfort everyday. We came hoping to rent a furnished apartment, but fell in love with an unfurnished one next to Retiro Park which is perfect for our pup. Like them, we have created community and value it immensely. My husband golfs with Spaniards and I take yoga classes with what I call the UN and volunteer at a church offering daily breakfast. I love being among in such an international group. I met my best friend here through Democrats Abroad (at the Pride Parade!) Have there been some frustrations along the way? Yup, being pescatarians in a jamon loving country being one of them. : ) Do we eat dinner at 10 pm? Nope. Do I feel blessed every day to live in Madrid? 100%. Thank you for this delightful video.

What an amazing apartment. I don't know if it's the camera angle, but it looks so roomy. I very much admire how they know and continue learning about the city and neighborhood. Their renovation is amazing and the artwork is stunning. Is the curved wall original or new? It looks great. I agree with them, we look forward to not be held down by an automobile. I really liked the menu of the Comic Cafe with the "YEAH" and the "POW". I loved the question about adapting to not working. A friend once said to me "if I won the Lotto, I'd still work". My reply was "if you can't think of a million things to do with your life when you finally get the financial opportunity, you don't deserve to win the Lotto". I will do so much when I retire to Spain. I'll visit local and distant museums, volunteer, etc. These guys are like Jim and myself. I do all the grilling and Jim is adept at the formal and intricate recipes. VETERANS!!!! Thank you for your service. These two gentlemen really did it correctly. OH wow, that octopus looked DELICIOUS. The paella looked so savory.

Loved the phrase James, ‘Know what is unmovable, know what must be flexible’. Great advice for life in general too!

I first went to Valencia in 1974, Franco in charge, plenty of dirt side streets, super cheap everything, zero hotels so I stayed with a family. I’m still friends with the family and the changes to Valencia have been stunning.
