  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31hXIJSIVhc&amp;t=85">1:25</a> - put another way, your tuner uses equal temperament (like a piano); but in a chord, solo playing, or playing with other string players or singers, you will use pure intonation.

  Yo yo Ma has one of the most sophisticated senses of tuning in the business - I don’t know any cellist who is more expressive with their intonation - he goes so far out of equal temperament, yet at his best it’s a huge part of why his sound is so expressive

  Using your voice for intonation is such excellent advice! Our instrument should resonate in our bodies, what better way to practice that feeling than singing along with it.

  Assuming that you can tell in tune for not in tune apart, I think the best thing you can do as a beginner/intermediate is to have many phases in your life in which you’re obsessed with intonation, record 30 seconds and listen to yourself right away, and then again later. It’s absolutely frustrating but it brings you to change radically.

  What a most wonderful teacher. &nbsp;I am always struck by Ilia&apos;s humility. &nbsp;Although he is a very great cellist he is very clear about his own practice. &nbsp;He is so encouraging and how lucky if students get a chance to study with him.

  Very good. Exactly a combination of all those things I’m fighting with. My slight strength is the listening for the right notes being played by anticipating what the next note should be by singing it in my head. But between the bow pressure, speed, angle and reading the notes and knowing where and what finger to use. Well I can hear it…..but it still sounds like crap.

  playing more chamber music is a great way - or listening along w recording / accompaniments
