Before The Gracies: The Hidden 1908 Origin of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

For 30 years, the world has believed one story about how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was born. The historical record tells a very different one — and it starts in 1908, six years before Mitsuyo Maeda ever reached Brazil. This is the story of six men whose fingerprints are all over the DNA of BJJ — and whose names were quietly written out of the official history. From a Japanese schoolteacher knocked out by a capoeira kick in 1909, to a Brazilian instructor who almost certainly taught Carlos Gracie the art now bearing his family's name, to a working-class master from the favelas whose team walked into the Gracie Academy in 1951 — and won. The Gracie family were extraordinary athletes and brilliant promoters. That part is true. But they did not build Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu alone. Six years before Maeda. Ran open-challenge submission-grappling matches at the Pavilhão Internacional. Knocked out by capoeirista Cyriaco Francisco da Silva on May 1, 1909. • MÁRIO ALEIXO — The first Brazilian to teach jiu-jitsu. Blended Japanese grappling with capoeira, savate and wrestling in Rio in the 1910s — a decade before Carlos Gracie ever laced up a gi. • JACYNTHO FERRO — One of the first five civilians Mitsuyo Maeda ever promoted to instructor rank (June 19, 1920). Newspaper records from Estado do Pará (June 26, 1921) explicitly list Carlos Gracie and Donato Pires dos Reis as HIS students — not Maeda's. Died young in 1929. • DONATO PIRES DOS REIS — Ferro's student, co-founder of the first academy that would eventually bear the Gracie name. • LUIZ FRANÇA — Another certified Maeda student. Took jiu-jitsu into the Brazilian Marines and the working-class neighborhoods the Gracies never served. • OSWALDO FADDA — Born January 15, 1921. Certified by França in 1942. In 1951 his team walked into the Gracie Academy itself and defeated the Gracies on their home mat.
