Scientists Just Made a Chip That Generates, Steers and Reads Light All at Once-Silicon Can't Do This

I checked the research behind this claim, and the underlying breakthrough is real. In May 2026, researchers from Monash University and collaborators reported an *on-chip valley optoelectronic nanocircuit* that can generate, selectively route, and electrically read valley-dependent light signals within a single integrated device. The work was published in *Nature Photonics*. The chip uses atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides together with specially engineered metasurfaces and waveguides. At room temperature, the device generates valley-dependent chiral photons, directs them into specific waveguide modes, and then detects them using atomically thin tungsten-diselenide photodetectors. The researchers demonstrated **all-on-chip processing of valley-multiplexed images**. The really important part is integration. The research team says that previous valleytronics approaches could generate or detect these signals, but combining *generation, routing and electrical readout in one compact device* remained an unresolved challenge. The new architecture addresses that bottleneck and points toward more compact programmable photonic systems. There is, however, one important correction to the headline: *“Silicon can't do this” is too absolute.* Silicon photonics already supports sophisticated on-chip light generation, modulation, routing and detection in many systems. What is genuinely new here is the integration of these functions for *valley-encoded optical information* using two-dimensional quantum materials and metasurfaces in a single circuit. The researchers see potential applications in faster and more energy-efficient information processing, optical communications, advanced imaging and quantum technologies.
