This has to be one of the best breakdowns of geographic and social landscape of the ancient world when Rome comes onto the scene.

exciting podcast, it's very difficult to synthesize 500 years of history. I especially appreciated that Dr. Elliott did not fall into the trap of telling anecdotes or an endless list of wars but gave the broad strokes of the trends and directions of the history, going to the point of the causes. The only thing is that I would have liked to hear a bit more about the internal changes of Roman society and how they impacted the history (the Gracchus reforms, the Social war, etc) beyond just the Spartacus revolt. Not too much to avoid cluttering, but at least an acknowledgement.

What's interesting to me is how the empire really began in the republican era with powerful citizens who were incentivized to expand the city's influence. It shows that empires aren't always these intentional things where one leader decided to go and conquer others but can emerge from complex political and economic forces.

Also Dr. Elliott is another one of those guests who would be great to sit down and have a pint with.
