Really a great tutorial! Easy to understand with excellent examples. I have painted for a while but I can’t always get my explanations across to newer painters. Your teaching skills make this a wonderful reference for painters new and experienced both.

I think the difference between whether an expensive or inexpensive paint is gonna be better with your shadows just depends on the pigments in the paints you're using. A single pigment colour is always going to be less muddy than a colour that has a bunch of different pigments in it. A lot of student grade paints are still single pigment and totally will work just fine. Basically the more pigments in your mix, the more muddy your end result will be.
Also important to consider is the transparency of the colours you choose to paint your shadows with. You always want to use highly transparent colours for your shadows (or any other glazing techniques).
The other big difference between student (and cheap craft watercolours) and artist grade is lightfastness. So basically what is your end goal for the piece? If the colour you use is not lightfast it will fade over time when the piece is displayed. But if the sketch is staying in your sketchbook, or you're scanning it to make prints or something like that, then lightfastness ratings don't really matter.
Opera pink for instance is an extremely fugitive (fast fading in light) colour even at artist grade, so I would avoid using it to mix your purple shadow colour.

I have a few paintings that are unfinished because they don't have shadows. Maybe now I will have the courage to finish them!

Scottie, thank you sooo much for taking the time to devise the examples of the 100% cotton paper v. Mixed media. Wow, that explains so much. Paint lifting etc. Also the shading options on the cylinders was gives me heaps of new options. You take such care in your videos to make them impactful. Much appreciated! 🦘
