Credentials to become a school principal: Drop out of university, do an online TEFL course and a 7 day Support Staff course qualifies you to be a principal. I would have liked the interviewer to dig deeper on this point

This is unbelievable, what a coincidence. He was my italki English teacher about 4 years ago. Hi Jake! If you still remember me, I'm that Russian guy who was preparing to get into university in Czechia and had to take the IELTS for that. :face-blue-smiling:It was quite a while ago now, but I still remember how interesting our conversations during the lessons were. They certainly played a part in opening me up to the idea of moving somewhere in Asia in the future (which I did now).

What are the chances of this video being recommended to me, considering I've only watched one video on this channel (matt vs japan one), and I'm not particularly interested in any Japan-related content lol...

Honestly.. the amount of stuff he said.. I would’ve quit the whole system a long time ago. Just feeling so demoralised about where things are headed.. knowing I won’t be able to make a difference even if I wanted to..

There is some real grit on display here. Hats off to him.

really loved this one!! i'm planning on applying to JET as well as Interac and likely other dispatch companies this fall and this was super interesting, thank you!! i'm really glad to hear about the personal experience of someone who worked as an ALT through a private company.

JET has the most glamorous reputation (for several reasons) but because of that it's highly competitive and space is super limited. i've also heard it's more expensive to contract a JET than to contract another dispatch ALT. like matt said, private companies get contracts by being cheaper than the alternatives, so that means less money getting paid to the ALT. buuut that means there are also more spaces and less competition for private dispatch companies, so i've been trying to read about all kinds of experiences to see what i can expect and what i'm willing to handle. and because ESID, it's entirely possible for someone to have a much better time working for a private company than another person is having with JET, due to the particular circumstances of their BOE and schools... all that to say, super helpful and interesting interview!!

also, matt convinced me i need to get some kind of TEFL certificate. i just graduated this past spring and tbh i still feel allergic to being on the student end of coursework, but it's really the least i can do if i want to work as an ALT, lol

It seems a lot of companies hire people from certain countries who look the part of an ENGLISH teacher.
It must be nice for companies and HR departments that hire people based on looks rather than experience and other important factors.

There must be an explanation why many Eikaiwas and dispatch companies have photos of Western-looking teachers on their websites.
It wouldn't be a good idea for a company to feature a non-Western-looking teacher on its website, especially for Eikaiwas.

If you don't look like a Westerner and want to teach English there, good luck finding a teaching job there.
It's the same for other East Asian countries.
