A beloved pet dog incurable ill (or too ill to economically cure), or breaking down in old age: "Put to sleep". <br><br>Dog bred to be dangerous and mistreated by owner, lashes out somewhere along the way: "Destroyed". <br><br>Is it linguistics? Like how a white collar criminal is (maybe) "sentenced" or "sent to prison". Whereas someone who committed a violent crime is "caged".
