I have been made very aware of the problems with shinigami eyes; I apologize for including it as evidence in the video and have removed its mention. All other points made still stand though.

Correction: The violet Labrys was never originally a transphobic one. It was originally, funnily enough, an EFFORT of reclamation in and of itself. It uses the upside down black triangle, a reclamation of the symbol nazis used to identify asocial women. The axe itself was a symbol of specifically lesbian feminism. It was not originally TERFy, it was actually STOLEN by them in an attempt to get people to associate it with them. This is an extremely modern phenomenon, and has not been associated with transphobes for nearly 40 years since its creation.

One small note about the swastika thing you mentioned: It is still pretty commonly used in it's original way in certain parts of the world. I once visited India, and I remember seeing a small local workshop of some kind where some machines had a few swastika stickers on it. It's mostly a religious symbol there I think. However, a swastika sticker in Europe or in America would get a very different reaction. What words and symbols means can vary a lot from culture to culture, and what might be completely normal in one culture can be extremely offensive in another

Love to see allies actually come to the defense of trans women. Rare thing to see.

Honestly what bothers me more about Willow is that it kind of plays into "Nonbinary is just women+" trope. Now, sure, Nonbinary people can be lesbians and fem aligned yada yada, but as someone who fights hard to actually be counted as my own thing, I don't like that here we have a movie that is basically "A movie about all the lesbian women! Including the they/them ones!" Yknow
Though I guess that one could be excused by saying well its a spectrum just the type of nb that fits this movie, its a set of all types of lesbians, not a set of all queer people, I guess.

I am a black person and i have never said the "N" word because i learned how it was used so i just feel uncomfortable thinking about saying it, but i will never stop other black people from saying it because its empowering to them. i don't have a problem reclaiming if if done BY the people who it was marginalizing. if the creator of the movie was a trans woman(which i also am.) i would have no problem with it. Instead its just a white person saying the "N" word.

I was honestly so baffled that the movie didn’t end with Saira finding Willow again and admitting that she was wrong and then they go to the lesbian ball happily ever after together. It would have been corny as hell but every signal I was getting around that scene was telling me it would be a 3rd act misunderstanding and not literally the last time we see the character

As a trans woman i really enjoyed the movie cuz i didnt notice any of its problems, and like, damn, i gotta think better i guess. That really sucks cuz with just minor tweaks it wouldnt be transphobic and would be the same story, why didnt they just do it good and cool. :(

Now I am not on the trans/nonconforming spectrum, but even as someone who enjoys this movie thoroughly and appreciates the story it is trying to tell, I was admittedly more than a bit ignorant of the extent of these transphobic aspects without looking into it like this. Except for the character of Blade, who even putting the transphobia aside, isn't all that great of a character to begin with.

I was talking about this movie with my boyfriend, asking why he hates it so much, and I think he put it best: It would be different if this movie released at a time when people on the trans/nonconforming spectrum are no longer the subject of discrimination. Or in other words, when a person's identity isn't associated with their negative role in a story, and their depiction can be assessed purely on a character-writing angle and not from the angle of it being bigotry.

even her suit is the old labrys lesbian flag colours. like why not use the current lesbian flag and give her sun themed weapon. it would contrast with the overall cold colour palette but whatever, the art direction is already shit

As a non binary person, I can't agree enough.

Asserting the logic of "the character isn't actually trans!" misses the fact that most transphobes (whether knowingly or subconsciously) don't believe real trans people are actually trans either, they just think they're dishonest or delusional. Making a predatory character's predation directly relate to their gender presentation is a problem regardless of the character's stated identity.

Drag queen and trans woman are not mutually exclusive categories either, there's heavy overlap in Gay and Trans cultures expressing genderfluidity because these lived experiences are not categorized into clean cut, unrelated boxes in real life. There is no consistent surefire way to tell apart trans women and gender nonconforming men because people can present however they want.

It reeks "We can always tell" transphobia.
