As someone who has lived in the NYC metro area a good portion of their life, NYC in vacation mode vs. living there full-time is so completely different. Mentally, it can be a very draining place and hard to relax. Financially, it can be hard to save as along with housing, anytime you leave your apartment it costs more than other areas in general. I understand the appeal but I think if you have that NYC itch, I think subletting for a few months would be better in the long run financially and mentally. Again, I understand. There is no place like it. But NYC is fantasized a lot/hyped up and feel like no one actually talks about the realities of daily living there. Of course in the end, do whatever feels best for the both of you. I saw someone else mention Philly, and I’ve lived there, too and it’s an amazing city especially West Philly with the greenery/parks. And it’s more affordable and has great walkability with seasons, too so maybe another option to think about.

Hopefully you’ll read this. As a Californian who moved to nyc for 3 years but came back. It’s a city that is nice to visit, but the pace and grind and cost of nyc making living there very much a treat race. For ref, I was making 120k but still barely getting by.

I like Portland for you. Personally I’m in nor cal lost coast area, so similar vibes but less urban.

You’ll land on your feet wherever you go. I’m just warning you on nyc…

you're so young. whatever choice you make will come with its own unique experiences, none of which (even at their worst) have the capacity to ruin your entire life. i'm excited for you and i hope that, regardless of whichever place you and Chris move to for however many years, that you're always able to make it a home <3

I think that Portland seems like a good fit. There is an interesting history of those of Chinese, Korean and Japanese descent in Portland, which could be worth exploring and making connections. I think it is tempting when life throws a curveball to consider completely uprooting and living a city life, but I think the day to day reality of living in a tiny NY apartment would get claustrophobic quickly.

I think Portland makes more sense. Seasons are nice but 5 months of winter not so much.

Winters in places like NYC are no joke and get old really quickly. You’re a grounded fellow, make sure you’re being honest with yourself and not romanticizing it.

If your long term goal is to buy a home in CA, I think you should keep your eye on the prize and consider factors that will contribute to attaining your goal. Affordability is definitely a consideration in determining how quickly you will accumulate enough for a down payment. While it might be enticing to move long distance, the obvious down side would be trying to transition back, especially house hunting from a distance as well as simply reestablishing your life and your social connections.

Having made a number of cross country and trans oceanic moves, it usually takes about 3 years to fully settle into a new location or to decide that the location isn't what you thought it would be. Moving is expensive and disruptive. Chris would have to find another job if that's income he needs, and it just takes awhile to figure out the day to day stuff like shopping and cultural offerings in a new place, not to mention establishing a social circle. Long distance moves always present unexpected challenges and you always miss those you left behind. Then, when you move back, you end up missing things you enjoyed in your previous location. I also guarantee that after dealing with 5 months of frigid winter in NYC or endless rain and grey skies in Portland, you'll long for those sunny 70 degree winter days in LA.

Have you considered finding less expensive housing in CA inland from LA? Temecula perhaps? A move like that might help financially while still keeping you connected to the things you love about LA. Just my 2 cents. I cannot evaluate your priorities, I'm only sharing my experience and ideas.

I was born in NY, raised in FL, but made a big move to Chicago, IL when I decided I needed to spread my wings. I visited 5-6 times over the span of 3 years before I settled on Chicago. I actually think y’all would enjoy Chicago… Very diverse, has seasons, has all the public transportation and excitement you seem to be curious about. It’s also in the Midwest, so you AND Chris would be equidistant from family. Since Chicago is a plane hub city, flights can be cheap. Out of your mentioned options though, I would say Portland.

I get the appeal to live in NYC, it's a dream for many. But considering your end goal is to buy a house eventually in California, I don't think living in NYC is the smartest move. Mostly because it's so expensive! You'll end up spending more and saving less. Your place will most likely be tiny, less space for decor, funitures and plants, and for your cat and dog too. It might affect your content as well (although I would watch anything from you!). I think you might like to rent an airbnb for a month or so to get that NYC experience you are craving instead without making a big move!

I've lived in both Portland and New York City, and Portland is amazing. The biodiversity here is magical, so I think you'd love it.
