Ome thing in particular I like about this level is that, despite the slightly creepy look of the corrupted turnip and Goombas, they still look like something Nintendo would come up with, albeit in a world where they were willing to get a little darker and atmospheric. I'm sure this'll be a great appetizer before the game gets even creepier later on!

what is this? A Mario horror game that probably uses and plays with in-universe mythos for it's content and story and be faithful to the Super Mario spirit without relying on the .exe trope? please be something like that

It honestly looks and sounds beautiful & calming, you wouldn’t expect something like this to be a horror game

I love the small detail that Mario just walks past the sleeping Goombas.

I genuinely love how Mario is portrayed in the top left corner, him reacting to every action he does is such a small detail but adds alot of style and flare to this already great reimagining of Mario.EXE (I love Mario in this artstyle that's going on he looks so pretty)

I’ll pile on everyone else’s praise by saying this project is basically in a league of its own when it comes to visuals and concept, wow. I hadn’t realized how much it would enrich a horror experience to also make it disarmingly beautiful. It’s such a seemingly unnecessary area to dedicate so much love and care that it gives the creepier intentions a layer of subtle misdirection. I am also so immediately in love with the idea of the zombie/infection virus coming from what would otherwise be a beautifully rendered Nintendo-style celestial anomaly. You’re striking a chord that resonates beyond evil game cartridges and shock-value gore, this really evokes the feelings of a well-known childhood game freaking you out by behaving unexpectedly. As a kid you didn’t really know how dark a game would ever go, and all it took a lot of the time for dread to settle into your active imagination was the knowledge that something was just a little off. Everything about this really walks that balance, so congrats.

ONE serious criticism I have to address just looking at the gameplay is the way that Mario’s position is so harshly confined to the exact center of the screen. I know it seems convenient at first glance to have Mario’s position be consistent in screen-space, but if you look back at any Nintendo-developed Mario they always frame the action within a little bounding box in which the camera only follows Mario when he’s at the edges, to help smoothen transitions and not have the camera swing wildly with every jump or change of direction. You’ll notice in some instances here, you immediately lose the ground below you just from rising a few blocks, and that’s one of those really “invisible” foundational platformer things that can really make an experience feel unnecessarily awkward/frustrating.

This project is too impressive not to offer what I feel like is really important but often overlooked feedback. Because I do think even beyond the look and the concept and the horror, if you want to make a convincing “scary Mario,” the effect gets easier to sell the more it feels like a real Mario. That’s basically the only area so far where you’re not totally out-doing the originals, imo. Good luck with the rest of the game!

i'm absolutely in love with the idea of a horrorbrew/creepypasta game that actually plays like a game in the series it's based on, and the visual style of this is an absolute treat
