  It is said that Hofmann was Rachmaninoff s idol since the St Petersburg conservatory times, in which the very young Hofmann was the only pupil of Anton Rubinstein.

  I could natter on about this wonderful presentation long and (break)-windedly, but just a couple of things. The chords Sauer supplies at the end of the piece........that can wrinkle some noses, perhaps, but we have testimony from Amy Fay and others that Liszt could change his works various ways when he played them. Although piano rolls aren&apos;t featured here, further evidence can be heard in the rolls of Stavenhagen and Reisenauer.<br>That photo of SVR&apos;s hands was on the cover of an early LP transfer of the PC#2 also, I recorded it from a friend&apos;s library around the time of the first moon landing, although first hearing of it was Brailowsky/Jorda on RCA Victrola.<br>When I was a kid I thought his name was Rock Monanoff.

  Although Golden Age pianists didn&apos;t have access to recordings of other pianists, you can bet they paid close attention to the pianists who were touring and made sure to attend concerts of those that interested them.
