The diary scene is the most impactful part for me too. I think many of us with complex PTSD &/or growing up in either abusive homes or abusive situations can relate to that diary entry so much. "Everything felt wrong, my body..the way things looked" & her describing her sadness & fear. I remember feeling so similarly as a kid, I also came to the conclusion that "something was wrong with me", vs someone(s) had failed me as a child. Poor Alice Palmer. Also this movie is still my top three, easily, in fact so far it's my favorite horror film & it's held that title in my head for decades now (first saw it in 2011 I believe).

This video is my favorite video of all the Lake Mungo reactions. I love the way the video opens with that haunting music. You should make more videos!

I really liked your interpretation!! For me this film also fills me with existential dread and I've been thinking about the film ever since I watched it. I've never felt more terrified in my life, like when I felt watching lake mungo

    Excellent. 👍

One distinction I'd make from your analysis that I haven't heard in my limited exploration of this film is the suspicion, after several watches, that June knew Alice was there in her final reading and turned her back on her. That she didn't heal her separation from her, ultimately, but broke from it.

I found this movie incredibly sad and powerful. Even days later, I had tears streaming down my face just thinking about it. One reason I found this movie so impactful is how much it focuses on the human side of things. I've seen mockumentaries before, but never one that felt so real.

I was actually less focused on the super natural stuff, although of course its incredibly important to the plot, and more focused on Alice's mind instead. It was just so easy caring for Alice because the film so meticulously shows off who she is.

Its not a caricature. Its not a cheap copy of a person that just moves the plot forward. It is an actual human being, with the film displaying all of her anxieties, her pleasures, her secrets, her flaws, her strengths. I was absolutely floored when the Tooheys video showed up. That to me was more shocking than the creepy jumpscare later on. Although, that did scare the hell out of me too.

I love how the plot just kept evolving. You think things are one way, but really they're another way. And it just does that over and over all the way to end. I also love how certain things arent made fully clear, both in terms of how certain scenes are shot but also in terms of Alice's life story.

Theres missing pieces for example, regarding the Tooheys video, her mum questions how long has this been going on for and even if she was in love with the father. I appreciate the nuance there, just because it would be so easy to look at the asymmetry of power and experience, and thus lean into clear evidence of some sort of abuse or grooming. Which, it could very well be those things. I'm just saying that description isnt always the full picture. And her mum didn't want to just presume it was one thing.

But there is evidence of course that behaviour had a negative effect on her overall mental wellbeing. Especially if it had been going on for a while, with that moment being the first time they actually filmed it.

Theres alot of things we never get clear answers to. It just adds to the sadness of the film that we'll never know the full richness of her life and her feelings becauses shes gone and that information has gone with her.

The subtlety. It allows each of us to question things differently. Come up with different conclusions and interpretations. Even the Movie poster left me feeling very sombre. This image of presumably Alice's face, except its shrouded in darkness and haze. Almost as if it can't be read anymore. As if you will no longer find signs of life on it. Reminds me of the OG Silent Hill games covers. Not the remake.

Incredible acting. Incredible cinematography. Incredible movie. It leaves me with a profound sense of empathy for my fellow human beings. And the pain we all experience in this life

That build up in the pit of my stomach is one that has been rarely achieved. Savageland also achieves this. That for me is that feeling of purest dread.
