Most people inherit wealth. Few use it to leave a living legacy. What happened on this hillside is genuinely inspiring

The other problem that affects small farmers, and the environment, is the sheep, and that affects not just the Scottish Highlands but the moors and uplands of England and Wales.

He showed the way but i hope after he leaves this world. That it remains protected and intact.

Reminds me of Sir Thomas More writing in his 1516 book Utopia that sheep "may be said now to devour men". By this, he was describing the devastating socioeconomic impact of the English enclosure movement aimed at wool production. That caused small farmer displacement and destitution, dissolution of social fabric and countryside destruction.

The re-introduction of wolves back into Yellowstone is an ecological success story worth looking at.

Bare for 400 years ? It wasn't the deer that cleared the trees it was the estate, I'm sure historical records will show how many trees were removed for profit.

I remember when people invested in land in Scotland, and filled it with fast growing pine to make money. Terry Wogan and other celebrities were part of it all and people like me thought it was a good idea. I am so glad the rewilding phenomenon has gathered pace.

It’s good to see true conservation and land stewardship happening. I wish more countries and people engaged in such positive actions.

The real problem for deer is that their natural habitat has been taken over by planted trees and deer fences, and they are forced to move on to ground where the owner has no knowledge of proper deer management.

It is an interesting business model too - there is eco-tourism that may actually bring in just as good returns as stalking and forestry. Ultimately, this estate and others like it have got to be self-sustaining economic entities.
