  I think what Tencent is doing is &quot;diversifying in the west&quot;. Basically, they&apos;re hedging by investing the excess cash they get from their domestic products into as many western entertainment companies as they can.<br>It&apos;s a numbers game. Low risk, high coverage, and if they lose they lose small, but if they win they win big.<br>It also helps that for those companies, Tencent is the gateway into the Chinese market, because when they&apos;re co-owned by Tencent they get treated like a domestic company, or at least partly domestic.<br><br>The minority stakes and the non-voting shares are what I find the most interesting. They don&apos;t want to deal with the paperwork and the hassle of actually running most of those companies. They want a nice, predictable and stable cash flow, without having to actually be directly involved in management.<br>The cool thing is that they&apos;re still involved in decisions, because they do provide a lot of capital, but they only get involved when they want.<br>It&apos;s brilliant, really.
