One of the most complete & satisfying musicians to listen to. Sad that he is now retired.

This was a South Bank Show presentation, Yes 1TV!. Rarely do we have such erudite documentaries nowadays. Ashkenazy is a global treasure, I was saddened to learn of his recent decision to retire from public performances. Thankfully he has left a huge recorded legacy.

Vladimir's comments about Beethoven are intriguing. Beethoven's music is emotionally charged; that is why he is the beginning of romantic music. No previous ever captured his level of emotionalism. This is what makes it eternal and Ashkenazy recognizes it.

I just adore Ashkenazy, and I have Christopher Nupen to thank for all of the wonderful documentaries he’s done with and about Ashkenazy, from the mid 1960’s. I already loved his piano music, but his personality is so inspiring and his gifts so prodigious that I can never hear from him enough, through whatever music he engages in! And I’m really glad this was made available to YouTube viewers, because I never knew it existed! Thank you!

Ashkenazy has the same voice now as then…lovely! Always my favourite Chopin pianist next to Rubinstein. I saw him at the festival hall in 1962 and what a programme that was. Mostly Chopin and he played five encores. We couldn’t get enough of this young Russian who had just come to the west.

I was born soon after the Ashkenazy’s came to London and stayed, but I’ve never only, “….been impressed with Ashkenazy’s virtuosity, blah blah blah,” or whatever the interviewer said around 21:50. I’ve been impressed by his intense, but never, ever self-indulgent musicality, his ability to consistently make me feel I’m listening to tried-and-true pieces for the first time or in a new way, more than any other musician I can think of, except for Glenn Gould and Bach and other instrumentalists for individual pieces, but never in the way or with the consistency of Ashkenazy’s playing. I feel that he immersed himself as much as is possible in the composers’ intent, and kept himself out of the way of what he discovered, as though he wanted to be the conduit and never the focus…that is the feeling I always come away with. And when I am completely transported by Radu Lupu’s sublime performances of works by Brahms, Schubert, and Schumann, I think it’s not possible that anyone could play those pieces as well as he, because he was another Ashkenazy in that regard. And then I’ll listen to Ashkenazy play the same piece I had listened to Lupu play, and I’ll think, “He is just as amazing as Lupu, they’re both using the same approach,” and it lifts me to a new understanding of the piece. And because Ashkenazy dove into conducting to such a large extent, I believe people forget his towering greatness as a pianist!
