Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Oliver, the inspiration for Harry Potter, and Mr. Bumble, the inspiration for Vernon Dursley!

7:05
Fun trivia: During one take as a practical joke on Harry Secombe (Mr. Bumble), the makeup department created a false ear for Mark Lester (Oliver), so that when Secombe grabbed the boy's ear, it came off in his hand.

The sad thing is that this really did happen.

In the 19th century workhouses were designed for those who had nowhere else to go. They were meant to show an 'example' to what would happen to those who would 'rather' beg on the streets than simply work.

Plus the poor & homeless were scorned by those who thought they were too 'lazy' to work & that workhouses were the best punishment.

In A Christmas Carol Scrooge perfectly demonstrated this by telling two men collecting donations, he would rather support the workhouses than help those he thinks are the 'surplus population'.

Our high school did Oliver Twist, circa 1983. They recruited 5th and 6th graders- I was one of them. It was awesome- hanging out with older kids and when not in rehersal, we got to play in the attached gym. I don't remember going bearfoot, but I absolutely remember the 'costumes'... basically a hand made shirt with buttons, and the 'pants' were actually made of burlap sacks, tied around our waste with twine, where we were instructed to wear dark shorts underneath. Also, during rehersals, where they gave us the gruel, it was all pretend, but sure enough- during the actual live performance, it was real! It was oatmeal (and really COLD oatmeal, lol), but since we were supposed to be orphans and hungry, we were encouraged to eat it all and make a mess, which for me was pretty fun as an 11 year old, lol! Good times, Good times.

The children were forced to eat something that was supper and was gruel. And that was a thin watery porridge with a few lumps of gristle floating in it.

One thing that strikes me about this is today many people are fat and long to be slim. But my grandmother told me in the early 20th century if a woman's husband was fat it was seen as a credit to her. Being overweight then was seen as a sign of health.
