Villa Savoye: The Perfect House That Wasn’t | Le Corbusier

What if one of the most important buildings in modern architecture was also a house that was difficult to live in? Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier is often celebrated as one of the greatest examples of modernist architecture — a revolutionary building that changed the way architects think about space, movement, light, and living. But behind its iconic white walls is a much more complicated story. Designed between 1928 and 1931 in Poissy, France, Villa Savoye was imagined as the ideal modern home. A house built around Le Corbusier’s famous Five Points of Architecture: • Pilotis (columns lifting the building from the ground) • The Free Plan • The Free Façade • Ribbon Windows • The Roof Garden However, the reality was very different. Soon after completion, the house suffered from water leaks, heating problems, maintenance issues, and conflicts between the architect’s vision and everyday life. So how did a house with so many practical problems become one of the most influential architectural works of the 20th century? In this video, we explore the complete story of Villa Savoye, including: 🏛️ The commission from the Savoye family 🏛️ Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret’s design process 🏛️ The Five Points of Modern Architecture 🏛️ How the automobile influenced the building’s design 🏛️ The Architectural Promenade and the importance of the ramp 🏛️ The relationship between movement, light, landscape, and space 🏛️ The hidden details behind the simplicity of the design 🏛️ The building’s problems, abandonment, and near demolition 🏛️ Its restoration and recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site 🏛️ Why Villa Savoye became a symbol of modern architecture despite its flaws Villa Savoye is not just a house. It is a story about the relationship between architectural ideas and real human experience. It shows that a building can be revolutionary as an architectural concept while still being imperfect as a place to live. Maybe Villa Savoye was not the perfect “machine for living” that Le Corbusier imagined. But it became something even more powerful: A machine for changing architecture forever. 🏛️ Project Information Project: Villa Savoye Location: Poissy, France Architects: Le Corbusier & Pierre Jeanneret Construction Period: 1928–1931 Architectural Style: Modern Architecture / International Style If you enjoy architecture documentaries, architectural history, modernism, design theory, and the stories behind iconic buildings, subscribe to the channel.
