SAJA in Korean mythology is not an evil spirit, but a civil servant in the afterlife. Koreans believed that when a person died, the sins they committed while alive were tried in hell, and that SAJA visited to take the souls of the dead to the judge of hell. So the expression "Hell Civil Servant" wouldn't be wrong.

Being born half korean to a mother from korea, all of this is right on the money. Good job to the person that did their research.

Did you hear that in begining of the song "my idol" they chant an old latin hymm ? "The last judgement" - (jinu was smart for adding that) (creators rather)

My daughter can't stop watching it. So cool to know they put in all this folk lore and culture into a animated movie

When I was in elementary school, I had a dozen or two Korean folklore books with English translations(picture books that would have the Korean below the English translation) and though I have no other ties to Korea I can't tell you how happy I was to recognize some of the folklore in this movie.

We have a word Ma kwi (마귀) in Korea . And Kwi ma is just pronouncing the word backward. Ma-gwi (마귀) is an evil spirit or demon in Korean culture. It often refers to a supernatural being that tempts or harms people.

Ma(마) means something devil like and Kwi(귀) means gost or spirit (we call ghost, 귀신). The word has nothing to do with ear(귀, kwi)!

Also, i heard that , aside from seojeung saja and dokkaebi , Gwi-ma minions also include mul gwisin (the long haired , water-dwelling monsters) , ghosts of drowned people and dalgyal gwisin (the faceless monsters ) , ghosts with no facial features (basically an korean slenderman )

As a Korean myself who has roots in Korean shamanism, I didn't like the depiction of them being seen as demons -- in which they're meant to be the exact opposite. They are known to help guide souls to the afterlife, and the higher hierarchy of the Saja's fight and kill demons.
I just feel like it's the typical Western route -- anything dark, dreary or intimidating is evil. I remember an American telling me, "Anubis is just Egyptian Satan" -- no, no he is not at all.

NOW, if they did make it about THOSE Saja boys in general -- that they went against everything they were meant for, that'd be an interesting take and it's a great opportunity for some creative writing. But nah, they're just demons. Nothing much.
