If you have twins teach them different fighting styles and then let them fight when they grow up like Dante and Virgil.

The best technique to use in a street fight is the Joestar secret technique.

The worst thing i found is that when everyone was kungfu fighting it was as fast as lightning, and if I'm honest it was a little bit frightening

I'm a full time BJJ/submission grappling coach at an MMA gym, and let me chime in with what I've found best after 20 years. 1. Something you have fun doing. 2 Somewhere close to home. 3. Somewhere with people you like and a healthy culture that doesn't feel toxic. I really think that's it, at first. Find an art that you enjoy doing, that sparks your curiosity, and that you want to keep showing up to, and make sure it's close so that it's easy to keep showing up to. And make sure the vibes are good and fit with your values and lifestyle. After that, if you want to branch out, or try different arts, or crosstrain, etc, feel free to. But I have seen so many people that want to do martial arts and they never get started, because they insist on finding a perfect martial art. Finding what is "most effective" is honestly one of the least important factors in finding a good place to get started.

Fighting is so much scarier than a lot of people realise. I got attacked by a stranger in a shop a year ago and it was so much more unpleasant than i thought.

One thing he almost touched on at the end but didn't quite get there: Pick a gym that isn't trying to nickel and dime you. If they have more belt colors than the rainbow, you have to buy all your own stuff, and there are fees every which way.... leave. Find a different gym. Regardless if you're learning for fun or learning for self defense, the vibe of the gym should be learning and love of the art, not shelling out cash for unlockable outfits and achievements.

Krav Maga reads like someone wanted to base an entire martial art off of scenes from 80's and 90's action movies.

I'm biased but Judo, especially for younger people. The physical and mental skillsets you pick up carries over to BJJ and Wrestling very well. But it also teaches you that being thrown and taking falls SUCK, and the empathy you build and learn from it is valuable. It's a great work out, it has the deepest level of competition if that's what you're interested (depending where you are), and the community and culture is extremely polite. My confidence in my sense of balance has done wonders for me.

Is it the best? Nah, and most Judokas dont play that game of "ours is the best" because we know it's a martial arts sports hybrid. But it is special and beautiful to watch and practice.

They said "Woolie Vs" and this man took that literally

Ultimately martial arts are a spectrum, from the martial to the art, and you just need to find where you prefer to sit on that. Just be true to yourself and your motives

I recently interupted a burglar who had got into mine and my partners house and was helping himself to our stuff.
The genius martial art we employed, which worked and achieved everything we wanted? "Sir, please leave."
Martial arts are great for feeling cool, growing a mind body connection and general fitness.

I really don't like the strange self-defence fantasy side of martial arts, that assumes if you work hard enough, you can beat someone up who suprises you with a gun/knife and is reasonably confident.
Cos yeah, for a lot of the scenarios posed in these wierd hypotheticals the correct answer is either "don't pick the fight" or "let them have your wallet".
